What Is ripgrep?
ripgrep is a line-oriented search tool that recursively searches directories for a regex pattern. By default, ripgrep respects your .gitignore and automatically skips hidden files, directories, and binary files. ripgrep has first class support on Windows, macOS and Linux.
ripgrep is similar to other popular search tools like The Silver Searcher, ack, and grep, but is generally faster than all of them. It was created in 2016 by Andrew Gallant and quickly became the go-to search tool for software developers worldwide.
Today, ripgrep is used by major projects and tools including Visual Studio Code (which uses it for its built-in search), and is available in virtually every major package repository.
About the Author
ripgrep was created by Andrew Gallant (known online as BurntSushi). Andrew is a software engineer and prolific open-source contributor who has authored many popular Rust crates including regex, csv, and the Aho-Corasick library that powers much of ripgrep's performance.
